Wonderful Wolves

Wonderful Wolves are fascinating to me. It may be because as a kid I had a beautiful shepard mix pup. With similar features as a wolf, she was awesome in so many ways. We grew up together on the farm and it was sweet. I still think of her and have her in my heart. That’s what you do with family members.

Whenever I visit the zoo, you could leave me by the Wonderful Wolves all day and I’d be happy right there. Here is a photo I took of the beauties at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois.

They have an amazing viewing area for their Mexican Grey Wolves called “Regenstein Wolf Woods”. The one-way glass allows you to get an up-close look at these gorgeous creatures. You can watch them as they roam around their woods. You might even feel like you’re in the pack! It’s a great experience for sure.

So anyway, onto the wonderful world of wonderful wolves!

At first, when the pups are born, they are about as helpless as they can be. They are blind, deaf, and they weigh around 12 ounces or so. Then, as a month goes by, they’ll have it all going for them. Pups then see, hear, and are well on their way to gaining weight, around ten pounds. They stay close to the den site as they play and explore their surroundings. In addition, the parents keep bringing food to them.

It will take only two months before the pups are fully weaned and their menu is now only meat. Once they hit the three month age, they’re on their way and moving around. So it’s possible that they’ll scamper for a few miles to different sites as they wait for their adults to finish their hunting trips.

Of course, as the pups grow up, reaching a year old, most are ready to leave and find a mate in another pack. However, they are still in the safety of their natal pack even while searching for their perfect mate.

The Wonderful Wolves live in packs and prefer sharing life together with anywhere from 3 to 11 other wolves per pack. The community is usually friendly with each other, but not always.

Alpha Wolves need to have control, leadership, and aggressive behavior. They lead as the pack hunts and travels. Also, they are the ones to eat first! They have to control the behavior of others.

Wolves are even similar to humans with respect to the family life. While being very social, it can also be very complicated. They even have “arguements” with their neighboring packs.

It is true that wolves walk a LOT.

Actually, that covers much of their time. They are built for it! Walking around 6 or 8 hours a day is normal and that can add up to as much as 4,000 miles yearly.

While these are just a few facts about wolves, I’m continuing to learn more and more about them. I’ll update again, maybe during a full moon or when the howling in the distance calls! There is so much to discover about these gorgeous animals.

Finally, being such a fan of the wonderful wolves, I also love to collect anything I can on them. I found some super deals on wolf items!
